Bento Boxes

Bento Boxes

Japanese bento boxes seem to be all the rage at the minute with boxes full of delicious-looking combinations. And they’re not just for kids!

Did you know that the word ‘bento’ originated from a Southern Song slang term and means “convenient” or “convenience”?

Well, convenience is something we can all definitely appreciate (in a fast paced business world) so why not give Bento boxes a try! I really like the principle of bento boxes for nutritional eating on the go, especially as we head into the winter and it gets a bit colder. They’re really handy with different compartments for different food groups (protein/Carbs/Veggies) so you can easily get into the habit of making sure you’re getting all the nutrients you need.

Some ideas for filling your compartments could include:

Smoked/baked salmon fillet, full of omega 3 fatty acids
A protein-packed mixed bean salad for extra fibre & essential B vitamins
A calcium-filled broccoli salad with sesame seeds for extra crunch
A handful of almonds for protein, fibre & essential fatty acids
Sliced boiled egg for vitamin D and iron
Veggie crudités for a multi vitamin boost
some blueberries for their anti-inflammatory properties
Quinoa or other slow releasing carbs for gut health and an energy boost. The list goes on….
