Sleep

We mentioned sleep as one of the positive changes we can make in 2024, to help improve our wellbeing. Getting a good nights sleep is very important for your overall health. It’s essential for maintaining good physical and mental health. Healthy sleep patterns can also help boost your immune system, maintain brain health and help reduce chronic illnesses. Here are some foods that help promote sleep health.

Bananas
Bananas are a great source of magnesium and potassium. They also contain tryptophan an amino acid that helps us to sleep but don’t forget fruit contains sugar too. So pick a green edged yellow banana (these have more complex starches – unlike the yellow brown speckled ones). Blend one banana with one cup of milk or soya milk to make an ideal bedtime drink.

Dairy
• Yoghurt, milk and cheese contain tryptophan helping us to sleep more easily. Calcium is effective in reducing stress. A warm cup of milk can help you to relax before bedtime. And eating some cheese before bedtime won’t give you nightmares!

Almonds
• Almonds contain magnesium, which helps both sleep and muscle relaxation. They also help to stabilise blood sugar levels during the night.

Cherries
• Cherries, particularly tart cherries, have been found to naturally boost melatonin production. Drink a glass of cherry juice or a serving of fresh, frozen or dried cherries before bedtime.

Complex Carbs
• Complex carbohydrate-rich foods increase the availability of tryptophan in the bloodstream. And can help you relax and nod off more easily.

Chamomile Tea
• Chamomile Tea contains antioxidants that promote sleep. Having a cup before bedtime can improve overall sleep quality.
